Acrobatic Skills Training  with Jim Donak

Train Efficiently • Train Intelligently • Train Safely

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
          SPORTS are biased towards pushing one's limits and short term goals. HEALTH is biased towards healing and sustainability. FITNESS is the overlap of these polarities.
          Jim Donak (of the San Francisco Circus Center) specializes in bringing healthy approaches to sports training and athletic approaches to health practices. For one weekend, Jim will be bringing his cross-disciplinary expertise to Austin. Acrobatic Skills Training  weekend workshop is offered in 8 self-contained sessions. Each session is capped at 8-16  participants to ensure high-quality instruction and individual attention.  From those with limited physical abilities to elite athletes, as well as movement therapists and movement instructors, Jim offers something for everyone.
          Jim is committed to providing a nurturing environment, focusing on individual needs and encouraging a sense of exploration and discovery, for a results-oriented experience.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:
          Jim Donak's fascination with the human body began at an early age. He began teaching himself anatomy and physiology at age 8 and studying Gung Fu at age 14. Since then, he has committed himself to in-depth studies of the healing arts, ranging from Tai Chi, kinesiology, and The Alexander Technique, to Neuro-Linguistic Programming, manual orthopedic and osteopathic techniques, and musculoskeletal therapy.
          His dedication to clinical knowledge is matched by his passion for dynamic movement, including practices such as Chinese martial arts, circus arts, sports, dance and outdoor recreational activities.
          Jim teaches anatomy and physiology, structure based bodywork techniques and sports applications for Tui Na. He has taught circus arts and functional movement for over 30 years and currently coaches at San Francisco's Circus Center where he teaches trampoline, acrobatics and his popular Physical Limitation Elimination class.
          Jim also maintains a private practice in Berkeley and San Francisco focusing on musculoskeletal healing and athletic development using manual and exercise therapies.

It is intended to augment the current programs by offering a class that works specifically on the dynamic application of back bending skills for inversions, limbers, walkovers, tumbling, partner acrobatics and the like. This workshop will include various learning methods with regard to increasing strength and stability, and range of motion throughout the 'backend'.

SESSION 3 ||   Creating Stability
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Stability is often mentioned and seldom understood beyond the idea of crude ‘bracing’. It is a much more nuanced skill. It requires specific training approaches beyond resistance training and yields indispensable rewards once nurtured. It is arguably the most foundational skill upon which strength and mobility are built. In this workshop, you will learn the difference between balance and stability and delve into the world of neurological training. You will learn how poor stability may be what is really limiting your strength and mobility and how to translate those often boring and tedious resistance exercises into true stability training. Not only will your joints love you for it, but you will also likely become more proficient at your craft while at the same time reducing the likelihood of injury.
Workshop emphasis is on refining functional skills and training safely. And with a focus on intelligent training these workshops will benefit you in ways you didn’t expect.
DAY: Saturday
TIME: 3:15pm-5:15pm
LOCATION: Blue Lapis Light
CAPACITY:  16 participants

SESSION 4 ||   Shoulders Demystified
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Shoulders demystified! Shoulders are complicated, and balancing mobility with stability and strength is challenging. Become familiar with the biomechanics of the shoulder complex, including: the local anatomy, the mechanics of the region, some common injuries and patterns of dysfunction found in this area along with the interplay of the shoulder complex with more distant areas of the body. The confusion often present with this region of the body and with how it relates to other areas is common and can lead set-backs. Understanding these relationships more clearly gives insight into the body's functionality, and/or lack thereof and the use of various asana for balance, correction and healing.

DAY: Saturday
TIME: 5:30pm-7:30pm

SESSION 5 ||   Handstand 1

Handstand is the foundation of all acrobatics. This class is for more advanced students, exploring many variations of handstands including planks, one handed handstands, headstands and handstand pushups.
*PRE-REQS: 60sec handstand against a wall; a 10secs one-arm handstand against a wall; hop up to handstand via tucked position.
DAY: Sunday
TIME: 10:30am-12:00pm

SESSION 6 ||   Spine, Abs, Core & More
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Understanding the difference between managing your spine, engaging abdominal integrity and the ability to transfer forces amongst your limbs will significantly change how you approach training. This understanding is essential if one wants to achieve and sustain high level athletic ability. This workshop will guide you discovering and training aspects of your most critical region. Refine your awareness of alignment and be challenged with strength and stability throughout your entire range of motion from the inside out and back again.
Workshop emphasis is on refining functional skills and training safely. And with a focus on intelligent training these workshops will benefit you in ways you didn’t expect.
DAY: Sunday
TIME: 12:15pm-1:45pm

SESSION 7 ||   Physical Limitation Elimination
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Physical Limitation Elimination (PLE) is designed for those who wish to increase functional range of motion as quickly as possible. In this challenging workshop, you will not only increase your range of motion, but also strengthen the structures that provide control and stability while in your maximum ranges. This is an excellent stand-alone workshop and is essential for those who want to excel in their acrobatic training. This workshop emphasizes injury-free techniques that deliver the most effective results.
DAY: Sunday
TIME: 3:15pm-5:15pm

Session 8 ||  Hips Demystified
FULL DESCRIPTION:
Hip openers! The most commonly requested category of yoga postures. Become familiar with the biomechanics of the pelvic region, including: the local anatomy, the mechanics of the region, some common injuries and patterns of dysfunction found in this area along with the interplay of the pelvic region with more distant areas of the body. The issues present in 'the hub' of the body will affect areas more peripheral and vice versa. Understanding these relationships more clearly gives insight into the body's functionality, and/or lack thereof as the use of various asana for balance, correction and healing.
